Under Canvas Lake Powell, a small review

It is not so often that we do any kind of special reviews of particular hotels or accommodations on our trips. We thought we might share our experience of the Under Canvas “glamping” site at Lake Powell, where we stayed mid-May 2023.

Under Canvas have camps dotted around many of the major sights in western USA, like Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Moab and other cool locations. When we were planning our trip to the area around Page, Arizona, we found the Lake Powell camp, and thought it looked like a very cool option for spending one night.

We chose the Stargazer tent, it has a window above the bed where you can lie at night and look at the stars, cool! The price? We paid abound 450 dollars, no breakfast included, for one night. We thought that this was a one off experience, even though the price tag was hefty.

The camp itself is not as remote as it looks on photos, you could see and hear the nearest road, although it was not heavy traffic, you could hear it in the distance. The tents were very cool, with log burner, very comfy bed, nice amenities but you are close to your neighbours and the tents are in no way soundproof. We also experienced powerful winds during the night, so it felt more like sleeping aboard a sailboat in a storm. The skies were also clouded, so no stars for us. We cannot fault the weather, so this does not detract from the experience.

The camps main area has a reception area, relax lounge with sofas and a restaurant at the end. We would have thought that the menu would be a bit more fancy but it was what we would call a normal menu with the usual items like burger and such. The outside sitting area with fire pits, nice furniture and free s`mores were cool, and sitting here during sunset and looking over towards Lake Powell and the mesas and buttes was the highlight for sure.

Was it worth the money? We would say a “meh” like the Simpsons say. The website is full of awards, high praise and nice photos but we did not “feel it”. At almost 500 dollars without breakfast, we expected something extraordinary, and we felt we got the ordinary at a premium. It was cool, it was different and it was unique but it did not make us feel like we wanted to go back the next time we visit Lake Powell. Sadly, we were left expecting more.

  1. Thank you for your honest review. Since we just dropped a boatload of money on a new travel trailer, this post makes me feel like we did the right thing. After all, any time we want, we can get a delicious breakfast; we just have to cook it! But I do have to admit – no free s’mores for us. Once the basic comforts are provided for – for me, it’s all about where we are and enjoying that place. Maybe you are the same?
