Holding a Tasmanian Devil and laptime with Dottie the Wombat at East Coast Natureworld, Tasmania

One of our absolute dreams and must to experiences when we visited Tasmania, was to see all the cool and unusual wildlife of the island.

There are no problems seeing wombats in the wild, same goes for most of the weird and wonderful fauna found on this remote island, except the elusive and infamous Tasmanian Devil.

The Tasmanian devil is a carnivorous marsupial native to Tasmania, Australia. It’s about the size of a small dog, known for its stocky build, black fur, loud screeches, and powerful jaws. Despite its fierce name and aggressive behavior when feeding or threatened, it’s generally shy. Tasmanian devils are scavengers and play an important role in their ecosystem. They are endangered, mainly due to a contagious facial tumor disease that has decimated their population.

In order to behold some devils close up, we made sure to visit East Coast Natureworld, just north of Bicheno on the east coast of Tasmania. We booked the ultimate tour, in order to see and feed as many animals as possible.

The tour was awesome and we got to feed sugargliders, cookaburras, echidnas, kangaroos and Tasmanian Devils. The highlight was holding 10 month old devils on our laps. Although Ørjan got quite smitten with Dottie the wombat who chose to sit on his lap for a long time.

The work that East Coast Natureworld does is important, breeding theatened species to be released in the wild and caring for orphans and hurt animals found by the road. We highly recommend to stop by and check out their exhibits, feed the animals and support their work.
