A swim at Beerbarrel Beach, St Helens Conservation Area, Tasmania

On our way to Bay Of Fires, we stayed overnight in St Helens and we decided to do a little detour to check out the Peron Dunes, part of the St Helens Conservation Area.

The whole area is a sandy spit of land with spectacular beaches and dunes between the ocean and the bay of St Helens.

We drove out simply to have a look, and see if we could get our first swim of our Tasmanian visit. We came all the way to the end at Beerbarrel Beach but we could see no swimmers, and we have learned to never swim in unknown waters, there could be rips or dangerous currents.

Walking around the corner of some rocks, we saw a group of pensioners bodyboarding and thought that this must be safe. It was a refreshing dip, the water in Tasmania is very Scandinavian in temperature, a very cool stop and name for a beach.
