This is another one of Tasmanias 60 great short walks, and we combined the Tall Trees Walk with the Russel Falls and Horseshoe Falls walk. From Horseshoe Falls we continued on the nice trail, up stairs, across small wooden bridges up to the Tall Trees walk doing it as a loop.

You can also do the easier option and drive from Mount Field Visitor Centre and up along Lake Dobson Road, approximately 2 km, there is a small car park available at the trailhead. From there it is a 1 km loop; approximately 30 minutes to complete.

If you choose our route, we took about 2 hours for the return walk via Russel Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Tall Trees Walk with photo stops, snack and water breaks along the trail.

The swamp gums in this area are among the tallest flowering plants on Earth, with some reaching over 100 meters in height. These ancient giants have been growing since before European settlement in Tasmania, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich natural history.

The trail is awesome, we had it mostly to ourselves when we came to the plateau with all the swamp gums. We saw lots of wildlife, the ever present Tasmanian Pademelons, Cookaburras, some sort of parrots up in the canopy, a superb Fairy-wren (what an awesome name!) and a cool enqusitive black bird.

The walk from Mount Field Visitor Centre to the Tall Trees Walk is more than just a stroll through the forest—it’s an invitation to connect with one of nature’s most enduring wonders. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a nature photographer, or simply someone looking to escape the routine of daily life, this trail offers a rejuvenating glimpse into a world where time seems to slow down and giants rule the landscape.
