The Coromandel Peninsula: From Cathedral Cove to Coromandel Township — A Spectacular Drive

Introduction to the Coromandel Peninsula

The Coromandel Peninsula is a rugged, forest-covered peninsula on the northeastern side of New Zealand’s North Island. It is known for its dramatic coastlines, dense native forests, geothermal beaches, and small seaside towns. Despite being only a few hours from Auckland, it feels remote and wild.

Before European arrival, the peninsula was home to Māori iwi (tribes), particularly Ngāti Maru and Ngāti Tamaterā.

In the 1800s, gold was discovered near Thames, triggering a gold rush that brought thousands of miners and helped shape the region’s early European settlements.

Because of its preserved forests and low population, parts of the Coromandel Peninsula still look much like they did hundreds of years ago, with ancient kauri trees and rich native wildlife.

From Cathedral Cove Toward the Coromandel

We arrived by car from the Bay of Plenty after visiting the spectacular Cathedral Cove (read about our visit here). We also made a quick stop at Hot Water Beach at high tide — unfortunately there was only beach and no hot water to be found.

A Quiet Swim at Cooks Beach

Next, we stopped at Cooks Beach for a refreshing swim. We were the only ones there on a warm but cloudy afternoon, which made it feel even more special.

The Stunning Drive via Kuaotunu

The drive from Whitianga to Coromandel Township was spectacular. We stopped at the cliffs at Kuaotunu and had a quick look around.

Sadly, we missed two of the most spectacular beaches in the area — Whangapoua Beach and New Chums Beach.

Awesome Driving!

As the road climbed steadily upwards, the views became even more impressive. At the summit, we could see across to both the Bay of Plenty and the Firth of Thames to the west.

Hairpins and Forest on the Way Down

The road down to Coromandel Township was equally amazing, with dense forest on both sides and switchbacks and hairpins all the way down.

Both the brakes and Tanja were screaming in some of the most challenging corners!

Arrival in Coromandel Township

We finally rolled into town and found our accommodation for the next two nights at the nice Olive Motel.

What a day it had been — absolutely awesome!
