Horseshoe Bend, a spectacular wonder of nature

A social media supermassive mega poser spot, Horseshoe Bend is a must visit for influencers and nature lovers alike. As a part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, it offers a spectacular view into the gorge of the meandering Colorado River as it heads down from Lake Powell towards the Grand Canyon.

The trailhead is easily accessible from Highway 89, not far from Page, Arizona, and approximately 5 miles (8km) from the Carl Hayden Visitors Centre. You will easily spot the parking area by the side of the road. The park itself is free but since the parking is on city land there is a fee of 10 USD per vehicle to enter, in return you get great spots for cars and RV alike, plus restrooms that are all well maintained.

The walk from the parking to the edge of the canyon is around 1,5 miles (2,4 km) round trip, it is a sloping path down towards the viewing area, and we would highly recommend to bring water and put on a hat a sunscreen before starting from your vehicle. There are two man made shade shelters on the way, there are no stairs, so it is easily accessible for disabled. The walk itself is easy but during mid-day sun in the heat of summer it will get warm for sure.

At the edge there is a viewing platform with fencing and it gives a breathtaking view of the Colorado River a 1000 feet below (305 metres) and the Horseshoe Bend itself. We can see how this is a totally Instagram place. The Colorado River makes a grand 270 degree sweep around a sandstone escarpment on its long journey towards the sea.

A small word of warning to all who visit who are like us, we like to take pictures and pose for a second or two but the level of influencer posing at the edge of the gorge was just something we have never witnessed before. The amount of people was quite big and the prancing and preening on the edge of the abyss was just mesmerizing. We are not quite sure why many visited, was it just a photo opportunity or were they there to wonder at natures marvel? It could also be us who are old farts, who knows?

Horseshoe Bend is still a must see if you are in the area, it is one of the great natural wonders of the world for sure. Should we be so lucky and be in that same area again, we would for sure take one of the scenic boat rides on the river below, it looked like an amazing experience!

  1. This place looks amazing. We are hoping to volunteer near there in Fall 2024. I am such a worry wart; I would never stand close to the edge or be silent if someone I loved was close. Thanks for your post. Your pictures are stunning and make me want to go there even more.
