Driving through Zion National Park!

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah, USA. It’s renowned for its stunning red rock formations, deep canyons, and diverse ecosystems. The park covers approximately 229 square miles (590 square kilometres) and is characterized by its towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and the Virgin River that carves through the landscape. Zion is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including desert bighorn sheep and a diverse array of vegetation.

The park offers a range of recreational activities, such as hiking, rock climbing, canyoneering, and camping. Some of the notable landmarks in the park include Angel’s Landing, a popular and challenging hiking trail that offers breathtaking views, and The Narrows, a slot canyon where visitors can wade through the Virgin River. Angel’s Landing is now so popularized through influencers and Instagrammers that there is a pilot permit program in effect, read about it here.

The Zion Park Boulevard, also known as Utah State Route 9, runs through the park from Mt Carmel Junction to the towns of La Verkin and Hurricane. It is accessible all year round weather permitting. We have driven this road a few times, twice from west to east with car and motorbike, and once from the east to the west. Both ways are spectacular but we think that east to west is most scenic of the two. We have used this way to get to Bryce Canyon from Las Vegas on our Loop Tour a few years ago.

The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive provides access to many of the park’s main attractions. Due to its popularity, especially during peak seasons, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and consider making reservations for camping or shuttle services. From March through late November, access to the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is by shuttle bus only. Private vehicles are allowed to access the Scenic Drive only when the Shuttle System is not in operation.

Zion National Park is part of the larger region known as the Grand Circle, which includes other iconic national parks like Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, and Arches, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Keep in mind that parking can be limited, especially at popular trailheads and viewpoints, so it’s a good idea to arrive early in the day. Enjoy your drive through Zion National Park!
