Lees Ferry, a historic detour on highway 89A

Lees Ferry is a historic site located in northern Arizona, USA. It is situated along the Colorado River, near the border with Utah. The ferry was established in the mid-1800s and was an important river crossing point for pioneers and settlers traveling through the region.

It is a very cool and different little detour from Two Bridges, and lets face it, if you are crossing two bridges you are already on a detour. Either coming from or travelling to the lesser visited North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Lees Ferry is the last stop in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and it is the only place within Glen Canyon where you can drive up to the Colorado Rivers edge in over 700 miles of canyon country. Just south of the ferry site there is a campground and a small “beach” area with a small inconspicuous sign that marks the start of the Grand Canyon as well! So cool to be able to actually swim (we did not, the water was freezing!) or at least wade in the Grand Canyon itself!

Lees Ferry is abut 42 miles (61 km) from Page via Hwy 89 south and Hwy 89A west, and it is 85 miles (125 km) from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Today, Lees Ferry is known for its scenic beauty and serves as the starting point for many river trips through the Grand Canyon. It’s also a popular spot for fishing and outdoor recreation. The nearby Glen Canyon Dam, which was completed in the 1960s, regulates the flow of the Colorado River and creates Lake Powell, a large reservoir that extends upstream from the ferry.

The area is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and offers opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring the stunning landscapes of the Colorado Plateau. The historic Lees Ferry Fort and Lonely Dell Ranch are also notable attractions in the vicinity.
